Downhill Snowboarding

I have heard alot of people mention Downhill Snowboarding all over the place. So I just wanted to clarify the term for all of you out there.

In the Skiing world, there are various types of Skiing – Cross Country, Aerial, Downhill etc. It seems as though lots of people who start as skiers and cross over to snowboarding then use the term Downhill Snowboarding. In fact, the term Downhill Snowboarding does not really exist – thats just regular snowboarding on a mountain (cross country does not exist, so therefore all snowboarding is downhill).

That said – there are several types of snowboarding which people often mention:

- Freeride: Refers to people who ride all of the mountain, and typically groomers etc.

- Freestyle: Refers to people who focus on tricks, air and spins. This style  usually involves using man made structures such as terrain parks, jumps etc.

- Jibbing: A style that evolved from ‘grinding’ skateboards; the focus here is on using man made objects (typically rails, boxes etc) to slide along. People also do this in urban environments (ie, riding snow covered rails, roofs etc).

Happy riding!
