Tomamu

Tomamu (also known as Tomamu Alpha resort) is a purpose built snow resort on the Northern Japanese Island of Hokkaido (famous for its deep powder snow). Tomamu is no exception to this rule, with an average 8 metres of the light fluffy stuff falling every year.

While the official skiable area is incomparable to some of the other Hokkaido resorts (ie, Niseko, Rusutsu), there are plenty of backcountry options available. This combined with the lack of crowds justifies a short visit to Tomamu, but we wouldn’t recommend spending more than a couple of days here.

Getting Here

If you are driving up, expect the drive to take 2-3 hours from Sapporo Airport (New Chitose Airport).

Public Transport

If you want to use public transport, the JR train runs to Tomamu station from Sapporo New Chitose airport (Tomamu station is on the JR Sekisho Line).

The train ride will take about one hour if you get the express (costs ¥3340) and then free shuttles from the train station will take you to the resort (no reservation needed).

Accommodation

Tomamu is a purpose built resort catering to the higher end of the market. As such, there are very limited accommodation options for you to choose from.

Options include Villa Sport hotel, the Tower and the Galleria Tower Suite Hotel (all which can be booked through the Tomamu Resort Website).

Nightlife

Nightlife in Tomamu is non existent. If you want to go to a snow resort where you can ride all day and party all night, go somewhere else!

In Hokkaido your best bet is Niseko (Hakuba).
